1207	THe family from the earliest record used the names KIKMAN and KAUFMAN with some people using either name at different times in their life. Andzej Seler, who obtained and translated many documents for me, stated that this could mean that the person was named after his mother because the parent's marriage was not formally registered with the authorities. The children were treated as illigitimate and took the mothers name. Later when the marriage was formally registered they could revert to the fathers name. Some did revert. Some stayed Kaufman. 1218	The following information comes from Gedaliah's Certificate of Naturalisation and the supporting papers behind the certificate :- a) The Certificate of Naturalisation gives his name as Gedaliah Kaugoner. In my opinion this name was given by an Enlish official reading Russian script on his Russian Army discharge papers. Written in cyrillic script this could look to an English Civil Servant as follows:- the third letter would be a "u" with a cidila beneath it the next letter "d" would look like a "g" a small uppercase h would read as "n" the silent ending at the end of the word could have been read as "er" b) He left Russia in 1904 and arrived in England on 25 June 1904. Metropolitan Police give date as 15 Jun 1904. c) He served in Russian Army from 15 Nov 1897 to 1 Sep 1901. Russian Military Book no. 121898 issued 29 Aug 1901 confirms birth date. Attached to Regiment 162 for three years and then became a reservist until 31 Dec 1905. N.B. date of arrival in England as b) above. d) On 8 Sep 1921 there were two married sisters in Latvia. Bruce Goldsmith said on 24 July 2003 that Mordechel amputated two fingers in Latvia in order to avoid military service and died of septicaemia Ev Jacobson wrote in Feb 2004 that Aunt Ida called him Rochamilkce. He ran away and died at a young age Latvia State Historical Archive dated May 2004 confirmed that the 1897 First All Russian Census recorded that he was born in 1881 and that his place of registration was Vilani in Resekne district working as a shoemaker. 1250	The Latvian State Historical Archives letter dated 24 May 02 provide the following information from the 1897 First All-Russian census:- a) he was born in 1876 b) Abram-Jankel was illiterate. This usually meant that he could not read Russian. c) At time of 1897 All- Russian census he lived in the house of Malkiel, Varaklyanskaya Street, Vilani,Latgale,Latvia in her parents home. d) His occupation was a tailor. The 1910 USA Census shows that on 15 April 1910 living on 4First Street in the City of Hobokmarried 9 years,en, Hudson, New Jersey the following:- Abraham SADIN head, male,white,age 33,married 9 years,born Russia (Lith), both parents born in Russia (Lith),year of immigration 1908,alien,speaks English, a tailor, works in a tailors shop, on own account, not working on 12 April 1910, no employees, able to read and write, rented home. Rebecca SADIN, wife, female, white, age 27, married 9 years, three children all living, ,born Russia (Lith), both parents born in Russia (Lith),year of immigration 1908,speaks English, no occupation, able to read and write, Bertha SADIN, daughter, female, white, age 8, single, born New York,born in New York.both parents born in Russia (Lith), speaks English, no occupation. Anna SADIN, daughter, female, white, age 4, single, born New York,born in New York.both parents born in Russia (Lith), speaks English, no occupation. Sophia SADIN, daughter, female, white, age 1, single, born New York,born in New York.both parents born in Russia (Lith), no occupation. The 1920 USA Census shows:- a) Abraham age 40, Rebecca age 36, Bella age 17, Anna age 12, Sophie age 10, Fannia age 8, Sidney age 3 and one boarder. b) occupation tailor whilst Bella is an office clerk The 1930 USA census shows living at house 236 East 178 Street, Bronx New York :- a) They lived in rented accomodation b) The family consisted of Abraham aged 52 (born 1878), Rebecca aged 46, Faye aged 18, Sydney aged 14, Simmie aged 21 was married to Jacob Gaul aged 23.
