THe family from the earliest record used the names KIKMAN and KAUFMAN with some people using either name at different times in their life.
Andzej Seler, who obtained and translated many documents for me, stated that this could mean that the person was named after his mother because the parent's marriage was not formally registered with the authorities. The children were treated as illigitimate and took the mothers name. Later when the marriage was formally registered they could revert to the fathers name. Some did revert. Some stayed Kaufman. Some used both names in their lifetime and switched names.
