- The following information comes from Gedaliah's Certificate of Naturalisation and the supporting papers behind the certificate :-
a) The Certificate of Naturalisation gives his name as Gedaliah Kaugoner. In my opinion this name was given by an Enlish official reading Russian script on his Russian Army discharge papers. Written in cyrillic script this could look to an English Civil Servant as follows:-
the third letter would be a "u" with a cidila beneath it the next letter "d" would look like a "g"
a small uppercase h would read as "n"
the silent ending at the end of the word could have been read as "er"
b) He left Russia in 1904 and arrived in England on 25 June 1904. Metropolitan Police give date as 15 Jun 1904.
c) He served in Russian Army from 15 Nov 1897 to 1 Sep 1901. Russian Military Book no. 121898 issued 29 Aug 1901 confirms birth date. Attached to Regiment 162 for three years and then became a reservist until 31 Dec 1905. N.B. date of arrival in England as b) above.
d) On 8 Sep 1921 there were two married sisters in Latvia. By implication all other siblings had left Latvia by that time.
e) During WW1 he made " war time boots"
f) His addresses in England were:-
i) Mar 1906 to 12 Apr 1908 at 32 Well Street, Hackney, London E.8.
ii) 13 Apr 1908 to 15 Feb 1911 at 4 Weston Place, Hackney, London E.8.
iii) 16 Feb 1911 to 14 Mar 1914 at 53 Chatham Place, Hackney, London E.8.
iv) 15 Mar 1914 to date (19 Oct 1923) at 9 Block 51 Tower Street Buildings, London Fields, Hackney, London E.8.
g) Gedaliah's Alien Registration Book was no. 290548 and Deborah's was 318763
h) Russian passport no. 48 issued at Vitebsk for England.

- [S20493] Naturalisation Papers.
- [S2] Birth certificate, Registration district Varaklani male birth no. 28/1875 (Reliability: 2).
I do not have the actual birth certificate but the register shows the following:-
Surname: KAIDEN
Given name: Gdalia
Place: Varaklani
Year: 1875
Date: 30 November (Julian calender)14 December (Gregorian cander)
Father's name: Yosel
Father's patronymic: Khaim
Mother'a name: Eida
Place of origin Minsk
Officiant: TIOPE
Leib SHTIKAN
(N.B) The officiant is the person who carried out the circumcision.
Although I had two other sources giving Gedaliah's date and place of birth it is my opinion that the entry in the Varaklani Registry that was made in 1875 must be the most accurate. It is still possible that Gedaliah was born in Vilani but that the birth was registered in Varaklani. Gedaliah's Naturalisation papers show his birth date as 2 January 1876. This, I think, is confusion between Julian and Gregorian calenders. His birth is registered as 30th November. Converting this to the Gregorian calender adds 12 days to the 14 December. I thik that Gedaliah added another two weeks thinking that the Gregorian date was the Julian date.
It also indicates the the KAIDEN family came from Minsk.
The other interesing fact is that Gdalia KAIDAN and Enta ZERDIN are consecutive entries in the register although Enta was born in August and Gdalia in November. The logical conclusion is that they went to the registry together and that they were either related or friends.
