    Married:
    • Elliot PONCHICK stated, in his 8 March 1989 family tree that Henry and Pauline were married in Brooklyn, New York. Daniel DORTER's family history gives their marriage as 1898 in Zbojna, Lomza, Poland. The Fourteenth Census of the Inuted States 1920 shows Henry arrived in the USA in 1903 snd was followed by Minnie, Abraham and Ida in 1905. I have therefore accepted Daniel DORTER's date and place of marriage.

  • Notes
    • Elliot PONCHICK in his 8 March 1989 family tree refers to grandfather as Henry (Enoch) KICKMAN and his great-grandparents as Hershel and Sarah KICKMAN. The later reconciles with my information but I had always been lead to believe that Chanuch had taken the name KAUFMAN before emmigrating to USA.

The Thirteenth USA Census in 1910 shows living on Madison Street, in Manhatten Borough :-

      Henry KAUFMAN, head, age 31.
Minnie KAUFMAN age 30, not working.
      Abraham KAUFMAN age 10.
      Ida KAUFMAN age 8.
      Esther KAUFMAN age 3.
      Harry KAUFMAN age 4mths.

The Fourteenth USA Census in 1920 shows:-

Henry KAUFMAN age 43 arrived in 1903, a presser in a clothing factory.
Minnie KAUFMAN, age 41, arrived 1905, no employment.
Abraham KAUFMAN, age 19, arrived 1905, a helper in a shipyard.
Ida KAUFMAN, age 17, arrived 1905, a saleslady in a clothing store.
Esther KAUFMAN, age 12 not working.
      Pauline KAUFMAN age 8.
      Nathamie KAUFMAN aged 3
      .
    • Danielle Dorter records :-

      a) Father was a 66 years old farmer when born. If this were true he would be 71 when Abram-Szloma was born. For this reason I have ignored this fact. She also states wife 24 ( or 27 ) years old. No names are mentioned. This has been verified in Herszka's marriage certificate to Sara-Mariem.

      b) Drafted into Russian army 1902. Age would have been 23 yrs. This seems too old for draft.

c ) Went to England c 1902 to be with brother and to escape draft.

      d) Arrived in USA in 1904. Ellis Island records a Henry Kaufman arriving from Dover, Kent, England aboard the Deutschland on 22 Sept. 1904. Upon arrival stated "staying with cousins"

      e) First lived as a border in an apartment on Lower East side

      f) Worked in sweat shop.

      e) His wife and children followed in 1906.

      e) Moved into own apartment on Lower East Side

Pauline said that Henry worked in Max's ( Mortek) sweat shop
    • The Fifteenth USA Census in 1930 shows:-

Henry Kaufman, head, owning home worth $12,000, age 50, married at age 18, born in Poland, immigrated in 1904, naturalisation status unclear, a pressing in clothing.

Minnie, wife, age 52, married at 20, born in Poland arrived 1906, not working.

Esther, daughter, age 22, born in New York, a book-keeper in Ignitions.

Harry, son, age 19, born New York, salesman, rugs.

Sophie, daughter, age 18, born New York, stenographer.

Pualine, daughter, age 15, born New York, not working.

Nettie, daughter, age 13, born New York, not working.

    • In an e-mail dated 24 May 2010 Renee Stern Steinig, a researcher stated:-
Henach Kikman sailed to St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, aboard the SS Lake Champlain. He arrived in Canada on Nov. 21, 1903, and then continued on to the U.S.

This immigration route was so common that Canada permitted American immigration agent to process immigrants in Canada before they crossed the border.

He was naturalized in Eastern District Court, Brooklyn, New York, on 10 June 1942 -- Petition #5329618.

His Petition for Naturalization states that he went from Halifax, Canada, to Newport, Vermont. Perhaps he crossed the U.S.-Canada border at Newport and continued by railroad, first to Boston, then on to New York City.

    1. [S3] Marriage Certificate, Registration district Nowogrod Akt M9 year 1877 (Reliability: 2), 27 May / 8 June 1877.
It happened in village of Nowogrod on 27th May / 8th June 1877 at 10 a.m.
He appeared the Jew Dawid Ber SZCZAWINOWICZ, member of the Jewish community of Nowogrod (kahal), accompanied by the witnesses, the Jews Kuszel CHMIELEWSKI, worker, age 70, and Lejba KON, shamus, age 69, both residents of the village Nowogrod, and announced that yesterday in fron of him a religious marriage had been concluded between Herszk Szlomowicz KKIKMAN, 53 years old, widower of Enta Szolimowicz KIKMAN, worker, son of the deceased parents, Szloma and Itka Pinkasowna married KIKMAN, and Sora Mariem KELLER, maiden, born and still living in the village Wyk, daughter of Jankiel and already deceased Ena married KELLER, workers, 25 years old, living together with her father.
The marriage had been preceeded by three announcements published in the local synagogue on 7th, 14th and 21st May this year. The newy-weds announced that they had concluded no marriage agreement.
Then this document upon being read aloud, was signed by us, the clients and the witnesses. The other persons declared that they were illiterate.
      (various signatures)

N.B. In this situation "illiterate" could mean that they could not read and write Russian. They could be litterate in Yiddish and Hebrew.
