b) The family consisted of Max aged 35, Fanny aged 32, Jenny J aged 13, Lillian aged 11 ( I assume that this is Lena), Sadie aged 9, Morris aged 8, Bessie aged 5 and Helen S aged 3 together with a sister Gertrude Levitt aged 18. (I assume Gertrude Levitt was Gertrude Liftin).
.

The Latvian State Historical Archives letter24 May 02 provide the following :-
a) He belonged to Daugavpils (formerly Dvinsk (Russian name)/ Dunaburg (German name)) Jewish community until at least 1875.
b) Later he belonged to Vilani (formerly Weilum (German name)) Jewish community
c) At time of 1897 All- Russian census he lived in the house of Malkiel, Varaklyanskaya Street, Vilani, Latvia
d) He was described as illiterate in the 1897 First All Russian Census however in 1899 he inserted in the Jewish newspaper Hamelitz, issue no. 72 on the back page,"Leib Zherdin donated 18 kopeck to the Jews of Israel" The number 18 in Hebrew is signified by the letter "Chai". The word "Chai" means life. I do not know the event that caused this donation but would guess it was the birth of his second grandchild Sadie Pornoi.
In May 2004 the Latvian State Historic Archive enclosed a copy of a document showing that he was registered with the Dvinsk Jewish community since 1870.

The Latvian State Historical Archives state that at time of 1897 All- Russian census he lived in the house of Malkiel, Varaklyanskaya Street, Vilyani, Latvia and was literate. In this context literate probably means that he could read cyrillic script.
His last Alien Registration Book states that he arrived in England in 1905. His Russian passport was dated 25 Nov 1905. If both dates are correct then he must have arrived in Dec 1905. I believe that he came with his wife Minnie and his brother-in-law Gedaliah Caiden. His sister Deborah Caiden stayed in Latvia with their sons, Morris and Joe until they were settled in England.
The Alien Registration Book no. 438805 issued 3 Sep 1930 at Leman Street London E.1 mentions retaining book no. 391095 issued Leman Street 21 Oct 1918. The Alien Registatrion Book gives his birth place as Wielum, Veliony, Rezhitsa, Latvia. Wielum is the German name for Vilani and Veliony must have been the official trying to understand when my grandfather repeated the name. His passport was issued at Vitebsk.
Address on Harry's birth certificate 3 Freemont Street, South Hackney, London. As they had only been in England for about 7 months this was probably their first home. South Hackney was not a normal address for a new immigrant. Gedaliah Caiden's brother Michael Caidan was living there at the time and he must have found them a room or they just looked in the area where he lived.
Within four years, by the time that Sid was born they had moved to 31 Ellingfort Road, Hackney, London.
When Jack was born the address was 71 Eleanor Road. The surname on his birth certificate is Isaac Sardin. I assume that he was called Jack after his grandfather Jankel who must have died bfore then.
When Jean was born the address was 4 Holcroft Road. The on her birth certificate was Fanny Sardin.
Three years later on Hirsh's Certificate of Military Discharge dated 20 Sep 1917 the address is still 4 Holcroft Road Hackney and his name anglicised to Harris Sardin.
The Alien Registration Book mentions going to Yewtree Cottage Bucklands nr. Aylesbury. This was were his daughter-in-law Polly was evacuated whilst pregnent with Adrienne
On his Russian passport and Alien Regestation document his occupation is stated as bootmaker. Jack's birth certificate describes him as a boot heel maker. I remember him with a shoe repair shop at 199 Lea Bridge Road, Leyton London E.10. My memory is of an artisan workshop with only a long counter behind which he carried out the repairs. He and Minnie lived behind and over the shop which was within walking distance of his son Sid's home. The garden was very simple but always neat and tidy with flower beds on three sides, a path around the edge and a small lawn in the cenctre.Although my grandfather died when I was 5 yrs I do recall a very erect proud looking man who I was slightly nervous of but never knew why
His death certificate has error in the year of death, it should be 1949 not 1947. The year of registration is shown as 1949 and his stone setting, which is normally about one year after the death, was announced in the Jewish Chronicle on 16 Jun 1950. The Hebrew date for his death was 9 Tammuz 5709
The Letters of Administration dated 24 Aug 1949 show his estate value as £1,818 0s 0p

The United Synagogue interview notes for the marriage of Solomon Kikman to Sarah Fox stated that Solomon had "two brother Henoch on Pinchas who will not be at the wedding."
Hanoch was, I believe, Henry KAUFMAN who was in USA.
My first view was that this could not be the Pinchas that Solomon referred to at the United Synagogue interview as he was older than Solomon's mother. However, I obtained Solomon's parent's marriage certificate. This refers to his father Herzka being married before to Enta Szlominowicz. This ties in Pinches's parents as Yenta and Herzka KIKMAN | KIKMAN Pinchas (I2306)
