| Zherdin family ZL 2 Leib ZHERDIN insertion in Hamelitz issue no. 72 in 1899.
Newspaper published in Hebrew in St Petersburg. |
| Zherdin family ZL 2 Lieb ZHERDIN research letter from the Latvian State Archive 24 May 2002 |
-
Notes |
- The Latvian State Historical Archives letter24 May 02 provide the following :-
a) He belonged to Daugavpils (formerly Dvinsk (Russian name)/ Dunaburg (German name)) Jewish community until at least 1875.
b) Later he belonged to Vilani (formerly Weilum (German name)) Jewish community
c) At time of 1897 All- Russian census he lived in the house of Malkiel, Varaklyanskaya Street, Vilani, Latvia
d) He was described as illiterate in the 1897 First All Russian Census however in 1899 he inserted in the Jewish newspaper Hamelitz, issue no. 72 on the back page,"Leib Zherdin donated 18 kopeck to the Jews of Israel" The number 18 in Hebrew is signified by the letter "Chai". The word "Chai" means life. I do not know the event that caused this donation but would guess it was the birth of his second grandchild Sadie Pornoi.
In May 2004 the Latvian State Historic Archive enclosed a copy of a document showing that he was registered with the Dvinsk Jewish community since 1870.
- In 1899 Lieb was mentioned in issue no. 72 of the Jewish newspaper Hamelitz which was published in St. Petersberg. The insertion states that Lieb Zherdin gave 18 kopecks to the Jews of Israel.
Born:
- Marriage certificate states age at marriage as 20. Married in 1871.
Died:
- I have in posession a postcard that has been translated and reads:-
" 1. UNIVERSAL POSTAL UNION OF RUSSIA
G. Zh
L. Zh ¹
2. To the eternal Memory of my dear cousin, Mina
From your loving ( illegible ) Tanya Sherg
If the memory is dear to you keep it and don't forget, but if you don't need any memory, then throw it wherever you like.
T. Sherg
January 5/1/1913
Trumany ² "
¹The translator has assumed that these are the initials of people connected with the postcard.
I assume G.Zh is Hirsh (Girsh) son of Lieb Zherdin and that L. Zh is Lieb. On this basis I have assumed that Leib was alive in 1913.
- Glen SADIN in an e-mail dated 15 December 2007 said that his father was known as Layella. This was the family name for Lieb and indicates that he had died before this date
