    • In an e-mail dated 3 June 2007 Vladimir Salita wrote the following:-

      I am working on Jewish family list (LDS films) for Novgorod –Seversk uyezd (region), Chernigov gubernia, Ukraine. I am working on these records because My father was born there and met my mother there.

      My grandmother Sora BEITELMAN (nee KWIN) and her brother Boruch KWIN together with his wife Bluma ZHERDIN moved there from Dvinsk (now Daugvpils, Latgale, Latvia) before or during WWI. Probably, Boruch moved there first and Sora with Yakov BEITELMAN followed on later.

      After 1919 Latvia became an independent state, and all contacts between the Latvian relatives and Ukraine relatives were broken. Only after USSR annexed Latvia, in 1950's could grandma Sora visit her relatives in Daugvpils.

      Boruch's family and Sora's family lived together, in one house in village named Pirogovka, Novgorod-Seversk uyezd before late 1930s. Ida KWIN has confirmed that fact.

      I suppose that Leib ZHERDIN invited Boruch to move to Pirogovka to get job there. Later Sora with Yakov BEITELMAN, who was a mechanic, moved and joined Boruch with Bluma. It has always been a puzzle to me why they moved from Dvinsk to the Ukraine. Now I think they moved because Bluma ZHERDIN had her nephew Leib already working there and he found them work.

      In the 1910 Pirogovka records I have found ZHERDIN, LEIB, son of MOVSHA, 30 years old (born 1880), settled there in 1904, came from Preli, Dvinsk uyezd, Vitebsk gub. Wife Tspia daughter of Gilam(?), 27 y. old. Son Movsha 3 y old. Daughter Ita-Leie 2 y old. Occupation: sales manager on saw-mill owned by Mendel Bass.


    2. [S3] Marriage Certificate, Registration distrct Vilna record number 301 year 1905 (Reliability: 3).
      On 18th August 1905 in Vilna the marriage was solomnized betwwen Leiba ZHERDIN from Premsky, son of Movsha, age 29, and Tzipa BERKMAN, age 29 from Dvinsk, daughter of Shlomo
