At time of 1897 census :-
a) He belonged to Vilani Jewish community
b) Worked as a cutter at tannery
c) Lived in the house of Malkiel, Varaklyanskaya Street, Vilani, Latvia
I have assumed that Yossel-Haim's son Yossef was named after him and that Yossel-Haim died whilst Eida was pregnant. I only heard about the son Yossef from Gerald Caiden who in turn had been told about him from his Israeli cousins in December 2002. As Yossef died during WW1 he was probably born before 1900.
Subsequently Alexsandra Fiegmanis (a Latvian genealogist and guide and a descendant of the Presma family i.e Deborah Caiden's mothers family) has sent me photographs of a stone in Varaklani cemetry of Josef Haim b Abraham d. 5659 which I calculate as 1899. If this is correct then he probably died in Vilani.
Died:
- Gedaliah Keidan gave his first child, born on 20 Apr 1903, the name Moshe (Morris). This could be after an ancester of Sheina-Fega PRESMA (his mother). Alternatively Yossel-Haim was still alive at this time. His second child Joe Caiden was, presumably, named after his grandfather who must have died before Joe was born on 17 Dec 1904.
Buried:
- There is a gravestone in Varaklani Cemetery, Latgale, Latvia dated 1899 for Yossel-Haim son of Abram. The date and place indicate that this could be Yossel-Haim KEIDAN's grave
