Notes |
- Occupations: Initially he was a cobbler then by 19 July 1922 he called himself a dealer and finally a textile merchant
- Mick FOX said that his father had told him the following:-
1)That he arrived in England when he was 16 with a brother who continued to the USA. From his approximate birth year this would have been about 1894. It is unclear if he was accompanied by his sister Sarah, who would have been 9 yrs old.
2) He arrived at Tower Bridge and that 6 or 7 people from the boat walked down Mansell Street.
3) He told Millie White that both his parents came from Michnitz (now called Myszyniec) in Poland
Name on Fanny's marriage certificate was Harris Fox
Bernie was present at his father's death
The 1911 Census shows Isaac, Millie, Sarah, Alfred and Polly STONE all born in Mishenits, Poland. In 2007 Mick FOX told me that his father was born in Myszyniec, Poland although the 1911 Census states that Henry FOX was German. Myszyniec, Mishenits, Mishenitz, Mishinyets and Mishnits are all the same shtetl which have a Jewish population of 600 in 1938.Essie STONE described herself as a cousin of Debbie Zerdin, who was the daughter of Sarah FOX who was Henry FOX's sister. This provides reasonable evidence that Myszyniec was, at least for a period of time, the home of the FOX family.
- The 1911 Census for England and Wales shows living in two rooms at 5 Sly Street, Cannon Street Road, E. the following people:-
Henry FOX, head of family, age 34 years, married 15 years, a bookbinder, born in Germany, a German citizen.
Rebecca FOX, wife, aged 36, married 15 years, 6 children born alive of which 5 are still alive, born in Germany, a German citizen
Fanny FOX, daughter aged 11 years, in school, born in Germany, German citizen
Benjamin FOX, son aged 9 years, at school, born in Germany, a German citizen
Harry Fox, aged 6 years, at school, born in St Georges, London
Joseph FOX, aged 4 years, all as previous.
Nathan FOX aged 1 year, all as previous.
The address of 5 Sly Street was where Henry's sister Sarah FOX had her first child Heya KICKMAN in 1907.
This is the first mention of any of the FOX family coming from Germany. If the Census is correct about the two eldest children being born in Germany it accounts for me not being able to trace their birth certificates.
Landsmen, a Jewish Genealogist magazine covering the Suwalk-Lomza region states in vol.19 numbers 3-4 page 26 para (6)
"Many Jews from Suwalk-Lomza appear in American censuses as "born in Germany." Jews in that border area identified with the German culture"
