  • Notes
    • JRI fax dated 20 June 2003 spelt name Sora Marim. The transliteration of her son Abram Shlomo's birth certificate is Marim. Alexander Beider's book The Dictionary of Ashkenazic Given Names implies that her name could have been a Russian transliteration of a German spelling of Miriam which we have now transliterated back to English as Mariem.

Abram Shlomo's birth certificate gives her age as 30 when he was born. This gives her birth year as 1854. Elliot PONCHICK gives her birth year as 1855 and death as 1940. I have therefore accepted these dates.

    1. [S3] Marriage Certificate, Registration district Nowogrod Akt M9 year 1877 (Reliability: 2), 27 May / 8 June 1877.
It happened in village of Nowogrod on 27th May / 8th June 1877 at 10 a.m.
He appeared the Jew Dawid Ber SZCZAWINOWICZ, member of the Jewish community of Nowogrod (kahal), accompanied by the witnesses, the Jews Kuszel CHMIELEWSKI, worker, age 70, and Lejba KON, shamus, age 69, both residents of the village Nowogrod, and announced that yesterday in fron of him a religious marriage had been concluded between Herszk Szlomowicz KKIKMAN, 53 years old, widower of Enta Szolimowicz KIKMAN, worker, son of the deceased parents, Szloma and Itka Pinkasowna married KIKMAN, and Sora Mariem KELLER, maiden, born and still living in the village Wyk, daughter of Jankiel and already deceased Ena married KELLER, workers, 25 years old, living together with her father.
The marriage had been preceeded by three announcements published in the local synagogue on 7th, 14th and 21st May this year. The newy-weds announced that they had concluded no marriage agreement.
Then this document upon being read aloud, was signed by us, the clients and the witnesses. The other persons declared that they were illiterate.
      (various signatures)

N.B. In this situation "illiterate" could mean that they could not read and write Russian. They could be litterate in Yiddish and Hebrew.
