- Ruth ( his daughter ) said that Joe always gave his birth date as 17 Dec 1904. This agrees with his fathers Certificate of Naturalisation. His Latvian birth certificate says that it was 6 Dec 1904. The difference is probably due to the fact that Russia used the Gregorian calander whilst we used the Julian calander. I have accepted the date used by Joe.
On a photocopy of the original birth certificate there is a translation in Joe Caiden's handwriting stating :-
" As shown from the Birth Register part 1 of the Vellyan ( Vilani ) Jewish Community for the year 1904 in paragrapgh 10 is the following :-
On 6 th December 1904 in the village of Vellyan a son named Joseph was born of the Vellyan Citizen Gdale Josephivitch ( i.e Gdale son of Joseph aka Jossel-Haim) Kayden and Doba Labovra ( i.e. Doba daughter of Lab that is Lieb ) " The words in brackets are my explainations

- Occupation: On Edna's birth certificate was described as general merchant's clerk. On Edna's marriage certificate Joe's occupation is shown as sewing machine dealer. It is my recollection that his brother-in-law owned a sewing machine company in City Road, Shorditch London.
- Joe Caiden was probably named after his grandfather Jossel-Haim. This would indicate that he had died before Joe was born. We know that Ada Caiden died in England and that she probably travelled with her daughter-in-law Dobba in 1905

- Ancestry.com contains a manifest for the S.S. Washington arriving in New York USA from Southampton, England on 21st. December 1937 with passengers Joseph CAIDEN age 33, a merchant, with Bertha, age 31, Edna Fay, age 8 and Ruth Adele, age 2.
