    1. [S08506] Death certificate, Registration distrct Nowogrod Registry D6/1896 Zbojna (Reliability: 2), 5 Apr 1896.
It took place in the settlement Nowogrod on 24th March / 5th April, 1896, at 7 p.m.

It appeared in person the Jew Hersz Fajba BRUKIEWICZ, shames, age 52, and Abram JABLONKIEWICZ, worker, age 41, both residents of the settlement Nowogroda, and announced that yesterday at 6 p.m. had died in village Zbojna Bejla Ryfka KIKMAN, worker, 56 years old, daughter of Nisson and Zlata nee BRUKIEWICZ.

After becoming convinced about the death of Bejla Ryfka Kikman, this document was read to the clients and signed by us only. The clients were illiterate. Clerk of the civil administration?

Record translated by Andrzej Seler October 2012.

    2. [S3] Marriage Certificate, Nowogrod Registry year 1859 Akt 10 (Reliability: 3).
It happened in town Nowogrod on 25th August (6th September), 1859, at 3 p.m. He appeared the Jew Hersz PELTEROWICZ, Rabbi of the Nowogrod Kahal, accompanied by the witnesses the Jews: Joszko Jankielowicz ROZENBAUM, a shames, age 50, and Zelman Abramowicz GRODNER, a shames, age 70, both residents of the village Nowogrod, and announced that today, in front of him, a religious marriage had been concluded between the Jew Pinches Herszkowicz KIKMAN, bachelor, 18 years old, a labourer, born in the village of Zbojna, district Hupisko?, and still living there with his parents, son of Herszek Szlamowicz and Jenta Szolimowna married name KICKMAN, tailors, and Bajla Ryfka Nisonowna BRUKIEWICZ, maiden, 18 years old, born and still living with her parents in town Nowogrod, daughter of Nison Herszkowicz and Zlota Fajbusiowna, family name BRUKIEWICZ, labourers.

This marriage was preceeded by three announcements published in the synagogue of Nowogrod on Sabbath days 1st/13th , 8th/20th and 15th/27th August this year. No reservations towards the marriage were registered. The verbal permission for the marriage was of the newly-weds, who also declared that no marriage agreement had been concluded.

Then this document was read to the clients and signed by the rabbi, who celebrated the marriage ceremony and witnesses. The newly-weds declared that they were illiterate.

      Clerk of the Civil Administration.
      (various signatures)

There are two dates for each event as the records had both the Julian and Gregorian calenders. The second date is the Gregorian and is the one that we use.
A shames is an official from a Synagogue.
Illiterate can reflect that the newly-weds do not read Russian. It is possible that they read Hebrew or Yiddish and were still classified as illiterate.
