Notes |
- Marriages:
I have two birth certificates for children of Sura Leya that indicate that her birth year was either 1839 or 1843. It is therefore unlikely that she was the mother of Meyer who was born in 1892. I also have the marriage certificate for David that shows his mother as Laja Faiga TCHORZ who was deceased in in 1879. I also have verbal testimony from a descendant of Meyer, who does not want to be included on this site, that Meyer's mother's name was Miriam. I have therefore concluded that Szmuel Hersz had at three wives namely Laja Faiga who died before 1879, Sora Laja who died before 1892 and Miriam. If my asumptions are correct then Szmuel Hersz who was born in, or around, 1823 had his a son David at the age of 34 and was 69 when Myer was born. These ages are based upon his death certificate reporting the correct age of death.
Name:
- In an e-mail dated 19 September 2007 Stanley Diamond, Executive Director of Jewish Records Indexing-Poland notified me that in 1903 Szmul Hersz ZAWADSKI died in Kielce, Poland. This is the name that I had thought was attributable to Samuel Harris ZAVADSKY. Mayer ZAWADSKY, on his naturalization papers gave his birth place as Chechin, Poland which may well have been Cheçiny, Poland
Died:
- Meyer ZAWADSKY named his first son Samuel when he was born in 1918
- Jacob ZAVADSKY presumably named his first son Harry after Jacob's father Szmul Hersz. Harris and Harry were common anglicised versions of Gershon which in Russian became Hirshor Hersz because there was no "G" sound in the Russian language

- [S08506] Death certificate, from the Polish State Archive (Reliability: 2).
It happened in the town of Cheçiny on 2nd / 15th February 1903, at 10 a.m. He appeared Hercek-Dawid LEJBA, a tailor, aged 65, and Alter MYDLO, aged 46, both shamuses living in the town of Cheçiny, and announcing that today at 8 a.m. in the town of Cheçiny had died Szmul-Hersz ZAWADZKI, 80 years old, the son of Zalman and Basia, originally from the town of Chmielnik.
After being convinced about the death of Szmul-Hersz ZAWADZKI this document was read aloud to the clients and signed only by me because they were illiterate.
Signed by the Clerk of the Civil Administration.
.
N.B. a) The date is shown using both the Gregorian and Julian calenders.
b) A shamus is an official from a synagogue or Jewish community.
c) Illiterate could mean that the person could not read Russian. It is unlikely that a shamus is totally illiterate.
