  • Notes
    • Frieda is a name that runs throughout the Kikman family. The oldest ancester that I have traced with this name is Zelik Keler's mother who was born around 1820

Sandra says that Freida married a cousin. Millie White confirmed this relationship. She said that Frieda had money compared with Polly, her mother-in-law. When they got married Rufus was in army. Millie said that Frieda was never welcomed in the Moss household.

Freda suffered from mental illness for as long as I can remember. Both my father and Max dealt with the problem. From time to time she would turn up and stay with either Max and Margie or us. Occassionally she became abusive to neighbours and the police were called. After I moved from Castle Drive she did not have my address but she was still returning to Max well into the 1970's. It appears that she died alone without any family or friends. Her death certificate states that the death was reported by the "person causing the body to be buried" KZ
    • The 1939 Register shows at 196 Cassland Road, Victoria Park, Hackney, London a Freda MOSS (RICKMAN) born 30 January 1920. There is very little doubt that this her family and her family address.

Thank you for your email. Although I'm afraid that hospital records do not usually include details of the burial place of patients, the entry for Ms Hickman in the St Bartholomew's Hospital Mortuary Register covering 1994 (our reference SBHB/MR/5/40) does provide details of the undertakers who collected her from the hospital. The firm, E.M. Kendalls still appears to exist (it is listed on a number of online directories), and so I would suggest that Mr Moss contacts them directly to see if they may be able to provide any further information. I have transcribed the entry from the mortuary register, p. 80, in full below:

      Date received in mortuary: 30/12/1994
      Surname: Hickman
      Other names: Freida
      Ward: [mark unclear] Andrews
      Age: -
      Sex: F
Signature of hospital officer responsible for removal to mortuary: J Martin/Morton [signature unclear]
Date of removal from hospital: 13/01/95
Signature of hospital officer responsible for handing body to undertaker: J Martin/Morton [signature unclear]
      Name of firm: EM Kendalls
Signature of representative [of undertaker] receiving body: C. Herrings [signature unclear]

There is no entry for Ms Hickman in the register of deaths for St Bartholomew's Hospital covering 1994-1995, and nor was there an "Andrews" ward at the hospital at this date. I believe that the information recorded in the mortuary register indicates that she actually died in St Andrew?s Hospital, located at Devons Road, Bromley-by-Bow. By 1994, services at St Andrews, previously a general hospital, but by then focusing on rehabilitation and geriatric care, being systematically reduced, prior to its final closure in 2006. I think it is possible that at this date St Andrews did not operate a mortuary, and so deceased patients were transferred to St Bartholomew?s before burial. Our series of female admissions registers for St Bartholomew?s only goes up to 1971, and so I am unable to verify whether or not Ms Hickman was admitted as a patient to the hospital.
